Au contraire to what many amateur golfers believe, hitting a draw is not particularly difficult neither is the
shot an unnecessary addition to your golf repertoire. As a matter of fact, a draw can be used on just about every hole and for several specific reasons as well, which makes it a valuable addition to your golfing skills. So, here is a look at some of the intricacies of the elusive draw shot.
When Should A Golf Draw Be Used?
You could use a draw for several reasons; not least of which is to get rid of the pesky habit of hitting a slice far too often. Some other scenarios in which hitting a draw can prove mighty useful are:
* When you have an obstacle such as a tree in between you and the target area and you need to bend the ball to reach the target.
* When you want to curve the golf ball around the corner of a dog leg hole
* A draw is a wonderful way to correct for aerodynamic influences such as the wind.
* To achieve greater distance than a fade; if all the parameters are kept equal, you could get 20 yards more on a tee shot with a draw
Dynamics Of The Golf Ball Movement In A Draw
You need to understand how the ball moves on impact if you are keen on hitting a draw perfectly without letting the shot turn into the dreaded hook.
In a draw the ball should curve gently from the right to the left; on impact, the ball should leave the tee with a fast anti-clockwise motion. To give this sideways spin to the golf ball; you will need to ensure that the club cuts across the surface of the ball, rolling past the dimples.
So, what actually happens is that the grooves of the club face dig into the surface of the ball and make it spin. However, you do not need to change your swing to get the ball to move in an anti-clockwise spin, use the same swing as you would for a straight shot, only altering the set up of your body at the address position.
Hitting A Draw – Adjust Your Set Up:
The first step to drawing a ball is to get your set up right and this is what you need to do:
Assume the same set up and stance that you would for a straight shot; however, ensure that you are five to ten yards to the right of your target; the more you move away, the more the ball will curve to the left if you hit the shot properly.
The golf ball and your feet should form a triangle with your feet at the base and the ball at the pivotal position.

When hitting a draw, you could keep a club straight on the ground so that you can assume a position that is precisely parallel to the target line.
Keep your head behind the ball; although your feet should be angled correctly in reference to the tee and the golf ball on it, with the tee bang opposite the buckle of your belt, if you are wearing one. Put the weight of your body on your right leg; moving your head to the right of the ball. A person standing in front of you should be able to see an angle made by your body and an imaginary line drawn straight up from the tee; this should be your stance for hitting a draw
Set The Golf Club And Its Face:
Now, it’s very important to concentrate on your navel; the grip of the golf club should be aligned with your navel.
The golf club face should be aligned towards the target so that you get a ‘glancing-blow’ which will give you the anti clockwise motion you want. Make sure that the golf club face is closed to the initial line of flight.
Adjust Your Golf Grip:
Do not bother to strengthen your grip for hitting a draw; the best way is to use a combination of a strong and light grip; so your right hand should grip the golf club tightly. while your left hand is loose. To put it simply, let your right hand overtake the left hand when the club face makes impact with the ball.
How To Get Your Golf Swing Right:
Do not change your swing; however, make sure the golf grip is pointed straight away from your navel; as if extending out of it and go into a nice back swing before bringing the club down lower and wider, but still straight in front of your feet. You may also want to keep your swing flat as this will make a big difference when hitting a draw.
After a couple of practice sessions you should able to make the draw shot without any trouble; you will find that very soon the draw will become a welcome addition to your game.
